The Rt Hon Jake Berry MP for Rossendale and Darwen

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for the Northern Powerhouse and Local Growth)

Jake was educated at Liverpool College, followed by the University of Sheffield, and trained as a solicitor in the City of London. He lives in Helmshore in Rossendale.

Before entering politics, Jake specialised in Housing and Development Law. This valuable experience has enabled him to effectively champion affordable housing and the Construction Sector within the House of Commons.

Jake was educated at Liverpool College, followed by the University of Sheffield, and trained as a solicitor in the City of London.Before becoming a Member of Parliament for Rossendale and Darwen in 2010, Jake specialised in Housing and Development Law. This valuable experience has enabled him to effectively champion affordable housing and the Construction Sector within the House of Commons.Jake was appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon. Grant Shapps MP, Minister for Housing and Local Government in 2010. In September 2012 Grant was appointed Conservative Party Chairman with Jake remaining as his PPS. 

Political career

In April 2013, Jake was asked by the Prime Minister to join his influential Policy Board and advise him on housing, local government and regional growth in Downing Street.

Jake was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon. Greg Hands MP from May 2015 until 14 June 2017.

He became an MP for for Rossendale and Darwen in 2010.

Jake was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Rt Hon. Grant Shapps MP in 2010.

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for the Northern Powerhouse and Local Growth)

The minister is responsible for:

  • The Northern Powerhouse
  • Mayors and devolution
  • Local growth – policy and initiatives (eg enterprise zones, high streets, coastal communities)
  • Place-based initiatives (eg Thames Estuary Growth Commission)
  • Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) policy
  • Inward investment and infrastructure (including High Speed 2)
  • European Regional Development Fund, and UK Shared Prosperity Fund
  • Resilience and Emergencies
  • Community rights (including pubs)
  • Minister for Secondary Legislation
