Back Berry’s Bill: MP launches campaign to protect children from gambling

Rossendale and Darwen MP Jake Berry is launching a bill to ban gambling adverts before the 9pm watershed.

Jake will be bringing the 10 Minute Rule Bill before Parliament on 1 April and he is asking as many people as possible to ‘sponsor’ it.

Jake said:

“When I was young, I used to read Beano by torchlight under the sheets – unfortunately the reality today is that youngsters could well be playing roulette, blackjack or even poker on their smartphone or tablet.

“My bill already has cross-party support, but the more people I can show that support it, the better chance I have of getting it made into law.

“I need your help to make this happen, so please show your support for banning gambling adverts before 9pm by signing up as a ‘co-sponsor’ of my bill.”

Figures from OfCom show that the number of adverts for gambling rose from 234,000 in 2007 to a staggering 1.4million in 2012.

Many of these adverts are shown during the daytime and early evening, normalising gambling for a whole generation of young people.  A worrying 15% of 11-15 year olds asked in a recent MORI survey had gambled in the last week.
